flax visitor centre
The Flax Visitor Centre is run by Upperlands Community Development and staffed by a small team of dedicated volunteers. The visitor centre was itself a former beetling mill known locally as the Road Engines Beetling House. The beetling house held 8 operational beetling engines and was one of several throughout the village. A commercially operating beetling mill still exists in the building opposite the visitor centre and a scaled down model can be viewed in the centre.
Our visitor centre incorporates a history of the village and an explanation of linen production, model exhibition and operational railway. The Flax Coffee Shop is housed in the building and provides tasty homemade refreshments.
